Legend has it that in 1971, a group of high school students self-dubbed the “Waldos” would meet after school at 4:20 p.m. to search for a mythical abandoned cannabis crop in the forest. Their meeting time and secret code, “420,” eventually evolved into a global phenomenon thanks to some coincidental connections.
According to a Huffington Post interview with the Waldos, a brother of the group was close with Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh. Soon enough, the Waldos were hanging out with the band, fueling the fire and spreading the 420 slang.
