Sunflower Oil for skin: Benefits and why we love using it.

Tatum Blakeney

With the vast amount of skincare products on the market, you would like to think that each product is crafted with ingredients that are good and healthy for our skin.  Unfortunately, this statement is not totally correct.  We see products full of sulfates, chemicals, and parabens.  Ingredients that harm our skin are more likely to be present in your typical lotion than not.  It’s always important to use products that have good ingredients because protecting your skin is important.  Our skin is one of our most vital organs, and it deserves the best.

The importance of Quality Skincare Products

The American Academy of Dermatology (AADA) has stated that having good knowledge of how to use skincare products can deter many skin problems from aging to even skin cancer.  Having poor quality ingredients in your skincare products can cause breakouts, dry skin, and could lead to long-term damage.   A Study by EWG, found that the average woman uses over 168 different chemicals on their skin every day. Over time these chemicals accumulate & most are detrimental to skin health.  It’s important to find products with clean and healthy ingredients, like our roll on products that contain sunflower oil and cannabis plant oil.

Sunflower Oil for Skin

It’s no lie that sunflowers are one of our favorite plants. There are so many ways to gain the benefits of sunflowers. From eating its protein-rich seeds to utilizing sunflower oil for skin. The benefits of these beautiful flowers are endless, not to mention they are one of the most sustainable plants to cultivate and extract.  For these reasons are why we choose it as our base carrier oil for our topical CBD products.

What is Sunflower oil?

Sunflower oil is made by pressing the seeds of the sunflower plant (Helianthus annuus). The pressed seeds of the sunflower plant excrete oil that is rich in vitamins and nutrients.  Sunflower oil can be used in food, in medicine (with its anti-inflammitory properties), and for skincare.

There are a lot of benefits of using Sunflower Oil for skincare products from nourishment to healing and even cleaning.  Sunflower oil benefits are endless, but here are some of our favorite reasons why to use it.

Sunflower oil for skin Protection

Sunflower oil is extremely high in vitamin E, one of the most vital vitamins for the maintenance of healthy skin.   Vitamin E is an antioxidant that reacts and combats environmental stressors.  It also absorbs energy from UV rays and protects us from free radicals.  Free Radicals are unstable atoms that can damage cells.

Sunflower oil may help reduce acne

Sunflower oil is particularly good for acne prevention and reduction.  It is non-irritating and does not clog pores. It is also rich in vitamins A, C, and D – this helps regenerate new skin cells which helps your skin rid itself of acne-causing bacteria.  Sunflower oil is also high in Linoleic Acid. Research has shown that people who suffer from acne, have lower concentrations of Linoleic Acid. Sunflower oil can help by supplementing your skin's Linoleic levels.

Sunflower oil for skin Moisturizing

Sunflower oil supports the skin’s natural ability to retain moisture and reduce dryness.  This can be particularly useful for those with sensitive skin or conditions such as eczema.

Sunflower oil for skin healing

Sunflower oil can help soothe and heal your skin.  Sunflower oil is rich in Omega 6 acid, which has anti-inflammatory properties and helps regenerate new skin cells.  It can help soothe and reduce skin redness.  Also, this means that sunflower oil has anti-aging properties!

Sunflower oil is a non-comedogenic

Sunflower oil has a comedogenic rating of 0, meaning it is light and quickly absorbs into the skin.  This makes it the perfect carrier oil for CBD and essential oils.  As sunflower CBD roll on quickly absorbs into the skin the CBD can sooner bind to the local receptors and the faster you will feel the results.  This also means that it is incredibly gentle, so it is the perfect oil for those with sensitive skin.

Are there side effects to Sunflower oil?

Sunflower oil for skin is typically non-irritating and found to be safe for most skin types. However, if you are allergic or sensitive to sunflower seeds or nut allergies, you may want to test it first on a small part of your skin and wait to see how you react. It should also be noted that if you have ragweed allergies, you may be sensitive to sunflower oil.

Sunflower oil for Skin Care CBD products

Overall there are so many wonderful benefits of sunflower oil, it is the perfect key ingredient to our Roll On topicals.  Utilizing the Sunflower oil as a carrier in CBD topicals allows for fast onset of the CBD and other ingredients present in these products. The roll on products also contain essential oils like Lavender, which can be a great essential oil for chronic pain.

In our CBD topical products, CBD oil is infused with sunflower oil, allowing the cannabinoids to bind to the natural lipids of the oil.  When applied topically, these cannabinoid-carrying lipids are carried across the skin cell membranes and absorbed into our skin, nerves, and muscles, this also helps with joint pain.  Here The CBD interacts with local Endocannabinoid Receptors.

Sunflower oil is also a great base oil in our Roll On products because it is naturally good for your skin.  At VIIA we believe in using only ingredients that show to have health benefits and we never add fillers or chemicals that can cause damage.  We find that in addition to the benefits of sunflower oil, sunflower oil also acts as a perfect infusing oil.  In order to create our powerful topicals, we infuse arnica into sunflower oil over a slow infusion process.
