Does Full Spectrum CBD Have THC?

If you’ve ever picked up a CBD product in the store, you might have noticed that it says “full spectrum” on the label.  You probably know that cannabis is made up of various plant compounds. The best-known ones are CBD and THC. But there are actually hundreds of these compounds. Each has unique features and uses!

CBD has been more and more widely used medicinally in recent years, and it’s becoming widely accepted. You don’t need to hide your CBD tincture or lotion from your Grandma — in fact, she might even use it herself.

One of the biggest reasons the stigma is falling, aside from the versatility and effectiveness of CBD products? Well, CBD doesn’t get you high. You probably know that. That’s why it might be confusing when you pick up a CBD product and see those words “full spectrum.”

So what does this all mean? Does full spectrum CBD have THC? Can it get you high? (and can you give it to your grandma?)

In this article, we’ll answer questions like “Does full spectrum CBD have THC?” We’ll also compare full spectrum CBD and CBD isolate and what each substance can do for you.

What’s the difference between CBD vs. THC

CBD and THC are two of the best-known plant compounds found in cannabis. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the central psychoactive compound.  In other words, THC is what gets you high when you use cannabis. It may decrease pain, help you relax, cause feelings of euphoria, and lower inhibitions.

CBD or cannabidiol, on the other hand, doesn’t have a psychoactive component. It binds to your body’s cell receptors, causing similar symptoms without the high.

Here’s what the research says about CBD and health:

Anxiety: A 2011 study indicated that CBD might help people with social anxiety disorder feel more relaxed in general. CBD has also been researched as a treatment for PTSD, especially PTSD-induced nightmares and insomnia.

Pain relief: A 2021 study suggested that CBD isolate has modest effects on reducing pain. Studies on the effects of full spectrum CBD on pain are forthcoming.

Inflammation: CBD’s effects on inflammatory conditions like arthritis has been the topic of many clinical studies. This research suggests that CBD may target certain types of inflammation on the molecular level.

Insomnia: There have been a number of studies on the effect of CBD on insomnia. These indicate that CBD may have a sedative effect, triggering the production of calming chemicals within the nervous system.

What Does Full Spectrum Mean?

Full spectrum cannabinoids are extracts that contain all the plant compounds in cannabis. This might include CBD, THC, CBN (cannabinol), CBG (cannabigerol), or any one of many others.

So what’s the difference between full spectrum CBD and other extracts?

Full spectrum CBD and CBD isolate undergo the same extraction and production process. The difference lies in the fact that CBD isolate is, well, isolated. In other words, it is just cannabidiol extract with nothing else.

Full spectrum CBD products include cannabis extracts, terpenes, and fillers like essential oils. Believe it or not, this actually can make a big difference in how your body processes these substances.

CBD isolate may only be effective for certain conditions. In particular, it requires highly specific doses when it comes to pain and inflammation.  This can be beneficial for some, though. That’s because the alternative is taking a full spectrum CBD product. That causes stronger effects with a stronger dosage.

People who need to take high doses of CBD might do better with CBD isolate. They won’t need to increase their dosage over time.

On the other hand, full spectrum CBD can be more effective and powerful for some. When cannabis compounds work together, they may have a stronger effect. This is called the “entourage effect”.

The entourage effect is a phenomenon observed specifically in cannabinoids. When combined with other compounds and terpenes, they may have an enhanced effect.

Does Full Spectrum CBD Have THC?

So does full spectrum CBD oil have THC in it?  To put it simply, yes. Full spectrum CBD oil and full spectrum hemp derived cbd products contain trace amounts of THC. Broad spectrum CBD products do not contain THC.

Under the 2018 Farm Bill, many CBD products containing less than 3 percent THC were legalized. Under law, these no longer classify as marijuana. Instead, they’re considered hemp products. Hemp is now separately classified from marijuana for the first time.

Wait, what exactly does this mean for CBD?  Legal CBD is a product that contains less than 3 percent THC.

If you don’t use cannabis products with THC, that 3 percent statistic might not mean much to you. To compare, most marijuana bud that you might buy in a legal dispensary will range from 15 to 25 percent THC.

Full Spectrum vs. Broad Spectrum vs. High Spectrum

You might also notice CBD products labeled as broad or high spectrum.  So what’s the difference?

Full spectrum CBD contains all the cannabis plant compounds and may include as much as 3 percent THC.

Broad spectrum CBD has all the plant compounds but no THC. Broad spectrum extracts have gone through an extra process to remove traceable THC.

High spectrum CBD products like the ones you’ll find at VIIA Hemp Co. have beneficial cannabis compounds as well as enough THC to give you a mild high. They do this while still staying below the legal limit of 3 percent).

So, to recap:

Does full spectrum CBD have THC? – Yes.

Does broad spectrum CBD have THC? – No.

Does high spectrum CBD have THC? – Yes, and it’ll give you a buzz — but it’s legal under the 2018 Farm Bill.

Does CBD isolate have THC? – No. It’s just isolated CBD and no other plant compounds.

Does Full Spectrum Hemp CBD Oil Have THC in it?

If you use hemp oil rather than CBD oil, you may have spotted the words “full spectrum” on the label there, too. Hemp oil, like CBD oil, is extracted from the cannabis plant. The difference is that it is sourced from the plant flower rather than the leaves and stem.

(Don’t get hemp oil confused with hemp seed oil, which  doesn’t contain cannabinoid compounds.)

Some people also use the terms hemp oil and CBD oil interchangeably. Yes, it’s confusing.

What is the full spectrum hemp oil definition?

Full spectrum hemp oil is an extract from cannabis flowers. It includes plant compounds like CBD. This means that it may have a wide range of health benefits. Hemp has been used around the world for millennia for everything from fiber products to protein supplements. It’s a pretty amazing substance.

But we’re here to talk about its medicinal uses.

Studies on hemp suggest it could have significant benefits for both mental and physical conditions. Full spectrum hemp oil contains various healthy compounds from the cannabis plant. It might have up to 100 distinct compounds, terpenes, flavonoids, and essential oils. This is in contrast to pure hemp oil, which is an isolate.

One of the main compounds in full spectrum hemp oil is CBD. This might be to blame for the interchangeable use of the terms CBD oil and hemp oil.  Regardless, hemp oil contains little to no THC. That means it does not have a psychoactive effect and can’t get you high. This was one of the biggest reasons for the 2018 Farm Bill’s legalization of the extract.

What’s the benefit?  Like full spectrum CBD, full spectrum hemp products can offer the “entourage effect”. The plant compounds work together and may provide better health benefits.

Can Full Spectrum CBD Get You High?

So, bottom line: does full spectrum CBD have THC? Yes. So can it get you high?

Assuming that the full spectrum CBD product you buy is properly processed, no. Most full spectrum CBD products contain a tiny amount of THC, but not enough to cause a psychoactive high. However, we should probably talk about our new Delta 9 THC Gummy line that we named Cloud 9.  These are full spectrum CBD gummies that do have higher levels of THC than normal full spectrum products.

According to the 2018 farm bill, federally legal hemp products contain less than 3% THC.   This means that some product doses can contain up to 10 MG of THC, legally.  VIIA Hemp Co has created a Full Spectrum product with these higher levels of THC – beneficial for those who want a CBD product they can truly feel.

Depending on a person’s tolerance levels to THC, Cloud 9 Gummies are able to produce a desirable high that many customers are searching for.  This is why it has been renamed to High Spectrum, rather than full spectrum.

If you are looking for full spectrum CBD and don’t want to experience any kind of high, there are still many products available for you to try.  There are full spectrum CBD oil drops, Vaporizers, Gummies, and Topicals that offer all the benefits of cannabis and none of the high.

Can Full Spectrum CBD Products Make You Fail a Drug Test?

So, does full spectrum CBD have THC? Yes. And we have established that most full spectrum products really can’t get you high.  What about drug tests?

Plenty of people have to take drug tests regularly for their job or for another situation. Is your full spectrum CBD oil that you take for anxiety going to make you lose your job? Well, probably not – however, it’s important that you use your best judgment on this.

First things first: CBD isolate will not cause you to test positive on a drug test. Drug tests look for THC or other compounds that your body makes while processing THC, called metabolites.

If you’re taking CBD with 3 percent or less THC, you’d likely have to consume a huge amount to get a positive drug test.

But that’s assuming that the product you’re using is correctly labeled. If your CBD oil isn’t from a reputable manufacturer, it might actually have more THC than the label claims. Remember that CBD products aren’t federally regulated!

It also depends on how much you consume and how you consume it. THC is fat soluble. That means that ingesting it via gummies or oils funnels these compounds to your body’s fat cells. That said, this usually isn’t detectable on a drug test unless you use CBD heavily – or are using a high spectrum product.

So what’s the bottom line?  These caveats emphasize two important points. First, review your state and employer rules about CBD products.

Second? Always get your full spectrum CBD from a reputable seller and check the levels of THC your full spectrum products contain. If you want to try CBD but are worried about failing a drug test, we suggest trying an isolate CBD product.
