A new product has entered the hemp industry that is taking consumers by surprise.  What is Delta 8 THC? Why is it becoming so popular?

As recreational cannabis use rapidly becomes more socially acceptable, people are lining up to try various different products from gummies, flowers, vapes, and topical products. Although cannabis use can have a wide array of medicinal benefits for its users, many individuals find that the psychoactive effects of marijuana are just too intoxicating for them and they don’t enjoy the ‘high.’ The reason for this is because of the high amounts of Delta 9 THC that is contained in today’s cannabis plant products. But what if we told you that there is another form of THC that naturally occurs in cannabis plants that can give a much more subtle, enjoyable high. Delta 8 THC is a close relative of Delta 9 THC, but when consumed, gives a very subtle, enjoyable body high and provides all of the safe positive benefits of Delta 9 THC. So, what is Delta 8 THC, and what are all the benefits? VIIA Hemp breaks it down in our Delta 8 Facts Sheet…

What is Delta 8 THC?

With Delta 8 THC emerging across the industry, it has people asking “What is Delta 8 THC”.

Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol, or Delta 8 for short, is a cannabinoid found in natural concentrations in cannabis and federal legal industrial hemp.  Cannabis produces over 150 known naturally occurring cannabinoids, all of which have a wide range of medicinal benefits; however, the most commonly studied cannabinoids are Delta 9 THC and CBD. Delta 8 THC occurs in relatively low concentrations, but that has not stopped companies and convenience stores from extracting and putting this minor cannabinoid on a pedestal.

Although the presence of Delta 8 in cannabis has been known since the 1940’s, it is only until recently that technology has allowed for pure extraction of Delta 8. This has led to an increase in popularity due to its pleasant benefits and effects on the body and mind.  Researchers connected Delta 8 THC to anti-anxiety, anti-nausea, and pain-relief advantages. Moreover, this substance can stimulate appetite and protect brain cells in humans due to the neuroprotective effects of Delta 8 THC.

Delta-8-THC is now available in a range of products including Delta 8 Gummies, Delta 8 Concentrates, and Delta 8  Vape Carts.

What is the difference between Delta 9 THC and Delta 8 THC?

Now that we have answered “What is Delta 8 THC” let’s answer the question, “What is the difference between Delta 8 THC and Delta 9 THC?”

Although there is a limited amount of research on the different effects from Delta 8 to Delta 9, what must be noted is its similar molecular structure.  Delta 8 THC and Delta 9 THC both have double bond structures, and because of this, it acts to cannabinoid receptors in the human body. That being said, there is still a molecular difference, and this has been shown to have different effects on the body when consumed.

Delta 8 effects are said to be considerably milder and more enjoyable compared to Delta 9. If consuming cannabis products with Delta 9 THC has made you paranoid, mentally foggy, unmotivated, depressed, or uncomfortable, then Delta 8 products might be worth a shot. Users of Delta 8 have reported a positive outlook on life after consumption in small doses and report a sense of relief from anxiety or depression, pain-relieving qualities, and improved quality of sleep.

Today you may see convenience stores cannabis products and think, “how is this legal?”
The Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018, also known as the Farm Bill, legalized all hemp production and all cannabinoid compounds found in hemp other than Delta 9 THC to be deemed legal. This means that as long as the product has a Delta 9 THC amount below 0.3% then it is legal for public health.

Because our Delta-8-THC products are 100% derived from legal industrial hemp, then our Delta-8 products are legal in states that have not specifically banned Delta 8 products. That being said, even though the Farm Bill federally legalized hemp-derived Delta 8, Delta 8 has been banned in the following states: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, Rhode Island, and Utah. In other states, it is legal, but please keep in mind that state legislatures may change this in the future and so before purchasing delta 8 products, you should always check with state  laws to avoid adverse events.

What are Delta 8 THC’s effects?

Since there are many users of Delta 8 products, there have been enough testimonials to show a general reported trend of the effects. Users report similar effects to Delta 9 THC but with far fewer side effects and a lower level of intensity. Although there is a ‘high’ associated with using Delta 8, reports from its many users say they have not experienced any unpleasant or negative mental side effects such as paranoia or negative thoughts.  Some other users have claimed to feel motivated and full of energy without getting lethargic like they have on delta 9. The preferred method of consumption among users has been Delta 8 Gummies and Delta 8 vape carts, the reason Delta 8 vape carts are common is that they are easy to measure dosage, they are discrete and convenient, and the effects are felt immediately (generally within 30 seconds to 1 minute).

The Benefits of Hemp derived Delta 8 THC

What are Delta 8 THC’s benefits? Now that we know this cannabinoid can induce a ‘high’ feeling or sensation, let’s check out the other benefits of Delta 8.  Here are several research studies that were done on the effects of Delta 8 THC.

Reducing Pain and Inflammation: A recent study published in 2018 in Cannabis and cannabinoid Research found Delta 8 to show a significant reduction in inflammation and pain in mice. Another study was done on rats that showed delta 8 was linked to pain relief and reduction in inflammation. Researchers linked these benefits to delta 8’s effect on the CB1 and CB2 receptors.

The antiemetic benefits of Delta 8: In a 1995 Study it described Delta-8-THC as a miraculous new cannabinoid that had a lower psychotropic potency than Delta-9-THC. In the study, children from ages 3-13 years old with hematologic cancer were found to have significantly reduced nausea and sickness related to their cancer treatment while not reporting any adverse side effects.

Appetite Benefits: In a 2004 Study, researchers analyzed the effects of delta 8 on appetite control. In the study, mice had gone through a weightless regiment and were not consuming as much food as they should have been. When Delta-8-THC was administered, the researchers noticed an improvement in their food consumption as well as an increase in cognitive function. The researchers concluded that low doses of Delta-8-THC showed significant therapeutic potential when treating weight loss disorders.

Although there are a limited number of studies, as Delta 8 continues to grow in popularity, we can expect significantly more research to be conducted going forward.

Delta 8 THC Dosage

When considering using Delta 8, the common forms are ingestible products or Delta 8 vape products. When ingesting hemp-derived Delta 8 THC, it is recommended to start with a lower dose. A usual oral dose for D8 THC ranges between 10-25 mg, we recommend starting with 5-10mg waiting several hours, and increasing if necessary. The issue with consuming Delta 8 edibles is there is a long delay period from the point of ingesting, to when the initial onset is felt.

Vaping Delta 8 is another form of ingesting and users report a much more immediate effect when vaporized. When using a delta 8 vape, a one to two-second puffs is recommended, followed by a 10-minute wait. Increase dose if needed after this period of time.

The duration of the effects of Delta 8 THC can vary from one user to another. High purity vapes can last one to four hours on average. On the contrary, edibles and tinctures can last five to twelve hours on average. Obviously, larger doses are more likely to create long-lasting effects.

Can you build a tolerance to Delta 8 THC?

Although there are no human studies available on the Hemp-derived Delta 8 THC tolerance, users have reported a tolerance does occur with consistent use that can be compared to Delta 9 THC. Users may expect to build tolerance slowly with time if they are consuming the product regularly. If tolerance does build over time, it is recommended to reduce use and try other products as CBD drops or CBD vapes. Because CBD is a different cannabinoid, there will not be any tolerance associated with consuming CBD. After a week or so, you may notice that by using delta 8 vape carts again your tolerance will be back to normal.
